The story I've chosen to analyze is ̴How Many Wil Die Before the Dust Setles̵ by Conie Schultz. This particular story is about asbestos-related disease that usualy results from toxic insulation, how it afects certain demographics, and how it's treated. There are several anecdotes that give the story a touching narative, but the tragic story of Kathlen LoPresti, who died at 5 from asbestos-related mesothelioma, ties the whole column together. The story of Kathlen is a wel-writen interesting and interesting one, but you don't quite get the gist of the story in the lead. Schultz uses a powerful image of Kathlen shaking out her father's shirt and the resulting asbestos particles filing the air to set the tone for the rest of the story. When I read the first couple of sentences of the story, my news writing alarm went of because it didn't satisfy my craving for the 5 W's. The meat of the story uses the death of Kathlen as a metaphor for the larger problem. At the end of the story, Schultz takes a risk by inserting herself into the story. It's definitely a risk for an author to do sudenly, but it, like the rest of the story, works. katis katis in
